In 1972, he served as Aide de Camp to Governor-General Sir Paul Hasluck. He then returned to continue what was a decorated military career.

He was appointed Chief of Army in 2000 and served as Chief of the Defence Force from 2002-2005.

Since retiring from the Australian Defence Force in 2005, Sir Peter has served on the boards of Qantas, Cardno and the Australian Rugby Union. He chaired the Council of the Australian War Memorial and was Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University.
